On June 8, 1967, an American spy ship, the U.S.S. Liberty, was bombed by Israeli fighter jets despite the ship's identifying markings and American flag. When the air attack ended, Israeli torpedo boats appeared and scored a direct hit. Two-thirds of the crew was killed and injured, and only heroic efforts saved the ship from sinking. Back in Washington, the news of the attack on the Liberty was received with shock and outrage. However, due to the Vietnam War and domestic politics, the attack was pushed to the back pages of the newspapers and ultimately all but forgotten. In this riveting book, James Scott--a journalist and the son of a surviving Liberty officer--recounts the story of the attack and shows how political considerations trumped the demands for justice.
