The mapping of Palestine is as much about the psyche of those doing the mapping as it is about their charting of the region. Author Thomas Suárez is uniquely qualified for this interdisciplinary task, as he is an authority on both the history of cartography and the relevant political/historical reality in Palestine.

In this lavishly illustrated volume, he takes the reader on a meticulously guided excursion through the mapping of historic Palestine from the earliest extant record two millennia past, through to the beginning of the twenty-first century.

The book cover the Greek and Roman concepts of the region, the various strains of medieval Latin (European) and Arabic (Islamic) mapping, and the “Holy Land” theme that has dominated European mapping of Palestine since the Reformation — but Suárez makes that view part of the story, rather than the lens through which he observes it, setting the book apart from all others on the mapping of the region.

Suárez's text follows the use and abuse of maps into the Christian proto-Zionism of the nineteenth century, and the Zionist movement proper through to the present.
