Second Edition
Commonwealth House Publishing is proud to release the Second Edition of Dr. Clifford Kiracofe’s groundbreaking book, Dark Crusade: The Israel Lobby and Christian Zionism. This Second Edition includes two new chapters, bringing the book through the illegal Iran War that has upended U.S. domestic politics.
Dark Crusade makes the compelling case that Christian Zionism is used as a political tool to rally support for U.S. and Israeli imperialism in the Middle East which is a reprisal of British Imperialism that led to the founding of the nation of Israel.
Dr. Clifford A. Kiracofe Jr., who served eleven years on the U.S. Senate staff, including as senior professional staff on the Foreign Relations Committee, argues that the modern alliance between the Israel lobby and American Christians has shaped U.S. Middle East policy far beyond ordinary diplomatic influence. The book explains why a large segment of American evangelicalism treats the State of Israel as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy, and how that view—absent from the early church and most of Christian history—originated.
Kiracofe traces the ideology to 19th-century British dispensationalism and imperial strategy, then follows its transmission into U.S. fundamentalism and postwar politics. The Second Edition examines recent Israeli public-diplomacy efforts directed at unsuspecting American Christians. These groups advertise heavily on Fox News, Newsmax and Salem Media Group radio stations. They also partner with conservative organizations, such as TPUSA, through their vast donor and nonprofit networks. The hasbara (propaganda) is unrelenting.
Unlike other recent books that treat the lobby mainly as an organized interest group shaping congressional and executive decisions or map the donor networks, Dark Crusade argues that dispensationalist Christian Zionism—not lobbying expenditures alone—supply the eschatological urgency that turns ordinary foreign-policy advocacy into a dark crusade.
