Huda Shaarawi
Feminist Press, 1986, paperback, 158 pp.
Huda Shaarawi was Egypt's first and foremost feminist nationalist. Born into an upper-class family, Shaarawi tells of the jealousy she felt toward her brother whom all favored over her and of the limits put on her education. Brought up in seclusion, her knowledge of French opened opportunities for her. She founded the Egyptian Feminist Union in 1923, leading it till her death in 1947. Offers first-hand insight into the development of Egypt's women's movement. Introduction and Translation by Margot Badran.
