The Liberation of Women & The New Woman: Two Documents in the History of Egyptian Feminism
Qasim Amin
American University in Cairo Press, 2000, paperback, 205 pp.
Two of the earliest and most important documents on women's emancipation in the Arab world. Amin (1863-1908) wrote The Liberation of Women in 1899, arguing that the liberation of women was a prerequisite for Egypt's liberation. Basing his arguments on Islamic principles, he met with severe criticism. In response, he wrote The New Woman in 1900, relying more on a Western model of development. These two books remain key works for understanding the Arab feminist movement. This is the first time both works appear together in English.
