| Two of the earliest and most important documents on women's emancipation in the Arab world. Amin (1863-1908) wrote The Liberation of Women in 1899, arguing that the liberation of women was a prerequisite for Egypt's liberation. Basing his arguments on Islamic principles, he met with severe criticism. In response, he wrote The New Woman in 1900, relying more on a Western model of development. These two books remain key works for understanding the Arab feminist movement. This is the first time both works appear together in English. |
